ABOUT THS-TV

STUDENTS EXPERIENCE TV, TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND MULTIMEDIA

Students find themselves in the midst of exciting changes in television, communication, and multimedia.  Within Tenafly High School's Library Media Center facility  students get hands on experience working with a wide range of equipment.  They take part in daily decisions and become part of the exciting dynamic found in live television broadcasting.  Knowledge and experience gained here will be beneficial no matter what career choice these students make.  Many students find their niche at THS-TV in front and behind the camera.

Involved students experience the excitement of live broadcasts and tapings of our school's events to include theatrical performances, sports, classes, video conferences, special events and promotional videotapes using  professional broadcast equipment. And students learn about the technical and historical aspects of television, a broadcast medium that rose out of the minds of  inventive and visionary persons early in the 20 century.  This is the only area of the school where students, under supervision, get hands on experience with the latest in streaming video technology, digital video editing, computer networking, graphics for television, imaging, and can experiment with television and computer technology.  We encourage our students to be the inventive and visionary persons of the 21st century.

Students will experience what it is like to work behind and in front of the camera in television.   With broadcast equipment donated from several television stations along with several grants from the T.E.F. and H.S.A., we have built a multi-use live television control room, chock full of professional broadcast equipment with lots of buttons and gadgets. A direct fiber optic transmission to Cablevision's head end allows for broadcast to all Cablevision subscribers in Tenafly.  Students become technically and / or artistically involved and they have the opportunity to learn about television production, refine their communication skills, and learn that the best broadcasts must have respect and good will as their central purpose.  Students that belong to this learning community form their own homeroom producing a “Morning Homeroom Program” that all other homerooms, Tenafly residents, and visitors to this web page can "tune in" to to get in tune!

Meetings in the library occur frequently.  Members that work on the production of school events have free access.  Active members receive special privileges & THS-TV identification badge. For more information see Mr. Di Gregorio, Media Specialist or Mr. Moger in the library.

IDEAS INTO REALITY: BUS METAMORPHOSIS

The idea for the video production mobile unit grew from a seed planted by Mr. Elefante.  He observed that there was a lot of  lugging equipment to and from the various games and events and suggested that a trailer might be a good idea, like the ones landscapers use, to easily house and transport all of our equipment from event to event.  One thing led to another, and after discussion and debate it was learned that the district needed to replace an older school bus (they can not be more that 10 years old and legal) with a new one.  A meeting was scheduled with Dr. Lund, Dr. Kontogiannis, Mr. Demikoff, Mr. Benenati, Mr. Digregorio and Mr. Moger and it was agreed that we would take possession of the bus and re-designate its use.  Its purpose now would be to house the mobile video equipment in order for student crews to broadcast football, soccer, hockey and other selected home and away games and events.  This mobile package will increase the variety and quality of sports and events seen on THS-TV.

Some months previous to this, and through many private donations, the H.S.A.  funded equipment we could use to record sporting events.  This included a video switcher, audio mixer, digital recording equipment, and preview monitors. Tribune (WB 11) donated  equipment racks, distribution amplifiers, and monitors, and other useful equipment to outfit the bus.   Mr. Di Gregorio, on his way to school one day, picked up a black console discarding on the curb.  Now, all this equipment could be housed in one place on wheels, so games and other events could be covered with less wear and tear on the equipment and more ease.

Over the summer, Mr. Benenati, Building and Grounds supervisor, along with David Inwood tore out the seats of the bus to make way for the equipment and supplied us with some left over carpet from the auditorium.  Meanwhile, Mr. Di Gregorio and Mr. Moger along with David Kim (04) Mark Fagnano (05), Ofir Davidesko (06), Justin Schroeder (06), and Andy Fill (06) outfitted the bus with the racks, carpet, and equipment.

There was one thing left that the old faded school bus needed; a paint job.  Through the THS

H.S.A. and a person that prefers to remain anonymous, the bus completely was sanded, repainted, and lettered.  Our new mobile broadcast truck was picked up  Friday, September 9 and used for the first time the day after at THS’ first football game of 2005.  The student crew inaugurated our video mobile unit included Ofir Davidesko, Justin Schoeder, Mai Anais, Greg Saperstein, and Jennifer Hellman with announcers Shane Levy, Keith Bendes, and Jon Frohlinger.  They made broadcast history for THS-TV.  We are grateful to each individual that helped make this happen!

CENTER LIBRARY TV STUDIO ANIMATION AND BEHIND THE SCENES

This animation, completed by graduate Marcin Mulkowski (2001) and summer employee Daniel DiGregorio (son of Eric Di Gregorio) was a visual inception of our center library studio used in our proposal of this innovative idea to high school administration.  Our high school library media facility is  the first and only in the country with a TV studio positioned at its center.  It has proved to be a space efficient and multi use facility: click animation loads

The THS - TV control room is filled with equipment, much of it donated. Here, students can gain hands on experience working with the equipment and each other for the purpose of communicating information, read more...
