News from the Library Media Center
December 2002 Memo

The library’s Electronic Reference Center is now open. It consists of six computers located in the library's north center alcove. Each computer logs in to a “kiosk” page with buttons leading to our subscribed electronic resource databases. The computers in this center have been profiled to go only to our library's subscribed databases. There are no other sites, email, or programs available on these machines. Users need not log in – all computers are open information kiosks available to all students and staff. All articles must be printed out. As the articles are read through, notes in the margin, or highlighting pertinent parts of each can be especially useful.
The thought behind deployment of this information delivery system is to have these particular terminals represent a reliable extension of our periodical and print collection in electronic form. You can be more sure that articles found here will have more integrity than the sometimes questionable sources found on the general Internet. Articles can be cited using the print source, such as New York Times or National Geographic for example.
Databases include Proquest Historical Newspapers, containing the New York Times 1851-1999 full text, Ebsco, Muse, Facts on File, World Book, Big Chalk Multimedia, and others. A public library card number will give access to two added and powerful databases (Proquest and Infotrac) listed on the kiosk page. Come on down and try it out!!
