Annette
Schembari, Library Secretary, has
just completed cataloging new
standardized test study guides into our reference collection. Now students can
make use of these recently purchased guides falling under the headings of SAT,
SAT II, HSPT, AP, and more. Interested students can use these guides
individually in the library or form study groups and meet at specified times.
Used effectively, these guides can help boost scores. The guides can be
found on a special cart in front of the electronic reference center.

Periodicals
Popular with THS Students
Throughout
the day, students can be found reading in the library's periodical area in front
of Mr. Elefante's 160 gallon fish tank. Dolores
Butler, Library Secretary, makes sure each periodical is received, processed,
and put on display on a timely basis so students can have access to the most
current periodicals. With a wide
variety of nearly 40 periodicals, there is something for everyone.

Electrical Installation
in Media Production Lab Complete
Under the direction of Vincent Benenati, Director of Buildings and Grounds, Wilber Smith and Tom LePore completed a beautiful new electrical installation that fully powers up the media production lab. The installation included bringing in additional power through a long custom cut electrical conduit, installing a circuit breaker sub-panel, (allowing us to turn the equipment on and off safely) and adding several electrical outlets located throughout the room. The fine work they have completed will be used for years more years and is much appreciated!

Library Purchases Funded by TEF Benefiting English
Classes
We
have been fulfilling requests for books and media from the English department
fallen under the heading of "literary criticism.”
The Tenafly Educational Foundation, through a grant the library received
last year, has funded these requests. Over the next several months we shall be
making additional purchases with the remainder of the funds.
Many thanks to the TEF for making these funds available!
Chief
Engineer of WNJU TV Brings Expertise
to Library’s Media Production Lab
Mr.
Bill Mierisch, WNJU’s Chief Engineer, recently spent three long days and many
precious hours planning, configuring, recommending, wiring, and teaching. He has
done this for us all on his own time, giving the school access to his
years of technical knowledge and expertise. Mr. Mierisch has been the driving
force behind getting the contributed equipment located in our Media Production
Lab / Television Control Room up and running. Mr. Mierisch has taught us about
the technical aspects of television which include timing, sync, phase, burst,
interlacing, cabling, BNC connections, distribution amps, patch panels and much
more. We have learned about reading
waveform monitors and vector scopes, essential to understand how TV works. Now
we have more knowledge to share with students so they have a chance to gain more
of an appreciation of how television works. We are on our way to having a
professional broadcast quality facility thanks to Mr. Mierisch!
Workshop Familiarizes Staff with Library’s Media
Production Lab
Mike
Hegarty and Jim Morrison (Social Studies), Fumiko Bacon (World Languages), Joe
Spilewski (Art), and Steve Moger (Theatre Arts), participated in a workshop over
the Christmas break that demonstrated the potential of the media production
lab/television control room and how it can be used for classes.
Steve Moger was a key to the success of this workshop through his careful
explanation of the equipment and its function.
During the workshop, several mock television productions were made. For
each, workshop participants were rotated, so every participant became familiar
with the equipment and its function. We experimented with the equipment, and,
through debriefing, formulated ways classes can best use this facility as a
group. At the end, Joe Spilewski gave us a tour of the graphic arts computer
lab, where we discussed ways of integrating this technology with video.
